Our Drywall Taping Process

Once the drywall sheets are installed, compound needs to be applied along with the tape to ensure that the seams are completely smooth, and the corners connect without any gaps. Drywall taping and mudding is a skilled practice that takes years to master, and we have been doing this a long time.

When sheets are hung, there is still a gap remaining in between them, and the corners need to be sealed. By applying a specially designed drywall tape to the seams and the corners, we can close this gap and have everything ready for the finishing touches.

We begin by applying a thick coat of mud along with a single line of drywall tape covering the entire seam. It takes 24 hours for the first layer to dry, so once we've sealed all the cracks, we leave for the day and plan to come back the following day to apply the second coat. The second coat is a little thinner and is meant to start smoothing out the first coat. Again, we have to wait 24 hours for the compound to dry before applying the third coat.

The third coat of mud is the final one that covers any remaining imperfections and sets us up for success. If the third coat of mud is applied properly, only a little bit of sanding will be required to finish the job off. We then sand any ridges and gaps so that the walls are perfectly smooth and even, and ready to be primed for the finishing paint coats.

The second and third coats of mud dry quicker than the first, but we still have to wait a day in order for the compound to be completely ready for reapplication.
